The Role: Come and join the Paediatric team at Northern Health, and gain fantastic exposure to Paediatric medicine in one of Melbourne's rapidly growing northern growth corridors.
Northern Health provides healthcare to a population of over 580,000 people, and in the Paediatric Department, we care for general paediatric medical and neonatal patients.
The service includes: A very busy Paediatric Emergency Department that sees approximately 25,000 Paediatric patients per year with designated Paediatric emergency medicine consultant supervision.
The Paediatric ED is accredited for PEM training and for acute training under RACP Advanced General Paediatric stream.
A Neonatal Unit with twenty-one cots, which provides high dependency neonatal care with a level five capability.
There is always a neonatologist covering, and we manage TPN, chest drainage, and ROP screening.
There are more than 3,600 infants born annually by the obstetric service.
A Children's Unit containing twenty-two beds (which includes two Paediatric Short Stay Unit beds) and caters for paediatric medical and paediatric surgical patients.
Prior to COVID, there were 2 paediatric HDU beds located in the adult ICU.
Northern Health is committed to medical education & training through the Teaching, Training & Research Precinct - a joint venture with The University of Melbourne, La Trobe University, and the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments.
There are 5 general Paediatric consultants and five dual-trained consultant neonatologists.
Visiting specialists provide outpatient services in respiratory medicine, neurology, genetics, allergy, and rheumatology.
The paediatric unit is an excellent environment to learn General Paediatrics and Neonatal Medicine.
Registrars are involved in admitting patients from ED, attending high-risk newborn deliveries, and reviewing infants on the post-natal ward with close supervision and support.
The registrars have opportunities to attend daily consultant-led outpatient clinics.
The unit has regular rostered paediatric and neonatal teaching sessions for registrars and HMOs as well as a weekly paediatric unit clinical meeting.
Northern Health is an RACP accredited secondment site for Basic Paediatric Training and a training site for Advanced Paediatric Training.
Northern Health is advertising for the following positions: Basic Paediatric trainees- Northern Health is a secondment site that has 3 full-time-equivalent (FTE) positions for rotating trainees (3 monthly rotations) from the RCH/MMC rotating roster.- In 2024, there will also be 1 FTE position selected from the Victorian Paediatric Basic Training Committee for either 6 month or 12 month placement.- Further information regarding the Rotating Registrar position and VPBTC positions can be found through the RCH Careers ( Accredited Advanced Paediatric and Continuing Paediatric basic positions offered through the Victorian Paediatric (Regional) Advanced Training website- This applies to Paediatric trainees who have successfully completed the written and clinical RACP exams OR those who have completed their basic training time but are yet to pass the RACP exams.- In order for the rotation to be accredited for advanced training, candidates must be registered as an advanced paediatric trainee through the RACP college.- Advanced paediatric trainees must apply BOTH through the Northern Success Factors website AND through the VPRAT website ( This will be available from 26/06/2023.- Northern Health jobs being offered can be 6 months or 12 months positions, and some will be offered as paired positions with other rotations to allow trainees to complete core requirements.
This includes:1) 6 months NH General Paediatrics & 6 months NH Paediatric ED2) 6 months NH General Paediatrics & 6 months NH Community Fellow 12 months NH General Paediatrics as Chief Registrar.
To be successful in this role you will have: Medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Current National Police and Working with Children History Check.
Enrolled into Paediatric Training through RACP as either a Continuing basic trainee or Advanced Paediatric trainee.
The Staff Immunisation Questionnaire must be completed by all new employees as part of the mandatory onboarding process.
New employees are not permitted to undertake any activity that requires patient contact prior to clearance by the Staff Immunisation Nurses; this also includes evidence of having the Flu vaccination on a yearly basis.
New employees with contraindications to vaccinations or who decline vaccination are required to attend a face-to-face consultation with the Immunisation Nurses for appropriate documentation of their contraindications or declination.
This must be completed PRIOR to commencing any work with Northern Health.
Please note: Part-time arrangements will also be considered.
