Responsibilities of the Assistant Director may include: • Supervise a small team, ensuring that they maintain or develop necessary policy and technical expertise. • Prepare high quality written and verbal advice, including reports and briefs on complex policy and legislative issues for managers, senior executives and the Minister, and prepare consultation papers, meeting papers, and policy guidelines to support sector and stakeholder consultation.
• Analyse legislative and legal contractual arrangements and provide sound and considered advice on options to support government and departmental priorities, while maintaining and supporting legislative compliance.
• Develop and progress legislative products, including explanatory materials, privacy impact analysis, and drafting instructions for the Office of Parliamentary Counsel. • Foster and support engagement and collaboration with relevant peers, senior leaders and the sector (including in Commonwealth agencies and state governments) to inform advice on data policy and progress legislative reforms.
• Maintain an in-depth understanding of relevant legislative and policy priorities and issues and ensure that team members are aware of and operate within relevant procedural frameworks.
Capabilities We are seeking multiple individuals with the following skills and capabilities: • Sound judgement, analytical and strategic skills to interpret legal, legislation and policy information and apply it to policy design and program implementation. • Highly developed written and oral communication skills, able to tailor your communication to your audience and be able to draft agenda, minutes, papers, briefs correspondence and other written materials.
• Ability to build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. • Ability to develop and maintain the policy, legislative and technical expertise to deliver team outcomes. • Demonstrated resilience and ability to work in a fast-paced environment on a range of strategic, operational and sometimes sensitive issues simultaneously and effectively.

responsibilities and duties) at each classification level.

This is a designated security assessed position.
The successful candidate will have the ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance. This selection process may be used to establish a merit pool.
The pool might be accessed to fill ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies for similar roles in the Department over the next 18 months.
