The Adult Parole Board (the Board) of Victoria is an independent statutory body established under the Corrections Act 1986, with jurisdiction over the appropriate release of offenders on parole. The Board is mandated to make decisions, under a statutory framework, about the reintegration of eligible prisoners into the community with community safety being the paramount consideration. The Board's functions include making decisions about whether to grant, deny, defer or cancel a prisoner's parole. As a statutory entity, the Board has no inherent power and can only perform functions under delegated authority of legislation. The Board sits within the portfolio of the Minister for Corrections. About the role The purpose of the full-time position of the Chairperson is to oversee the Board and provide associated leadership, guidance and mentoring to the Board's full-time and sessional members. The Chair presides over meetings of the Board and will bring a high level of knowledge and technical skill in the area of criminal law, to ensure decisions of the Board are of a high quality, consistent and clearly articulated, and also exhibit a commitment to fairness and promote the perception of fairness, tolerance and a sensitivity to difference and particular needs. The Chairperson, Adult Parole Board is accountable for the following: Presiding as Chairperson of the Board and participating in the exercise of the powers and functions conferred on the Board by the Corrections Act 1986 Leading the Board and providing guidance and mentoring to its members Determining the release of serious violent and sexual offenders into the community Determining any questions of law arising before a Division of the Board Developing, implementing, reviewing and improving systems, policies and guidelines to monitor and review the outcomes of decisions and improve the quality and consistency of decision-making Developing and maintaining strategic relationships with key agencies involved in the criminal justice system to support the exercise of the Board's functions Keeping abreast of developments in parole. Who we're looking for The Corrections Act 1986 stipulates the Chairperson must be a Judge, retired Judge, Associate Judge, retired Associate Judge, Magistrate or retired Magistrate or an Australian lawyer of at least 10 years' standing.
