Role This position requires attendance Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:36pm.
An education support class position at this range will perform tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice, and school policy under supervision and direction.
This may include coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program.
An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of a teacher as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor.
Supervision of students can be required individually or in groups up to 4 in controlled circumstances and where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.
Certification and/or qualifications of up to three years can be required at this level (noting that Registered Nurse is not included at this level, the first level for which is Level 1 range 3).
A role at this range may include: Specific support tasks to achieve outcomes, typically involving accountability for a single function (e.g.
ensuring data is properly maintained) or the coordination of a work area under the direction of the principal or a manager.
Assisting teachers, within an educational program, by undertaking specific support tasks or the coordination of the support function.
Supervised health and wellbeing support tasks, medical intervention support tasks, or other specialised student/teacher support roles (e.g.
enrolled nurses performing the role as described in schedule 3).
These roles require specific qualifications and/or training, including roles where further training must be undertaken from time to time.
Technical tasks that require a sound knowledge of basic technical and/or scientific principles that are used to develop and adapt work methods and make judgements where there are clear guidelines and limited options.
Responsibilities The Laboratory Technician Assistant The major tasks, accountabilities and responsibilities associated with the position are: General Responsible for the management and efficient operation of the science laboratory area.
Coordinate use of all science materials around the school.
Keeping a record of classroom experiments.
Participation in school activities such as working parties, College Meetings as directed.
Teacher and student support Work closely with Science Domain Leader and provide technical support to all science staff.
Review and sign the risk assessments written by teachers and provide appropriate control measures for staff and students.
May assist in writing new risk assessments if the teachers require.
Assist science teachers to change the timetable and organise for a room swap where a science classroom is required for an activity.
Support science teachers to design new science experiments.
Trialing of experiments: Run tests on new pracs, where required, to ensure they give the desired results and modifying the material/methods and risk assessment in consultation with the teachers and/or science coordinator.
Review, evaluate and modify laboratory practice where required; advise of alternatives/develop new methods in case of high level of risk.
Creating educational materials such as videos and microscope photos, researching and sourcing information for science topics at all year levels and sharing them with appropriate science staff.
Class demos of some practical activities upon teacher's request.
Assist pre-service and paraprofessional teachers, and CRTs in the classroom upon their request with some science activities.
Feedback collection from the teachers to gather data for the next stages of improvement.
Preparing science activities for events such as orientation day or science week.
Supervising students during yard duty.
Writing student instructions for safety or correct use of equipment (e.g.
microscopes).
Assisting within the classroom during science practicals.
Equipment Performing calibration checks and fixing minor equipment malfunction issues.
Liaison Liaise with sales representatives.
Active member of laboratory technician association of Victoria and Labtalk.
Liaise with other schools and local lab techs to share laboratory resources.
Pass on to the Science teaching staff PD opportunities, excursions, different practical and other relevant information.
Participation in professional development opportunities.
OHS Ensure appropriate paperwork is completed to make the science rooms a safe work area.
Ensure science staff complete risk assessments for all science practical activities.
Keep hard copies of all risk assessments for all science practical activities.
Develop and implement measures for safe purchase/handling/storage/disposal of hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods in accordance with department regulations and guidelines.
Set up all storage areas to comply with OHS regulations.
Implement and regularly update the chemical register and SDS documents.
Regular safety inspections of the science lab and science classrooms, identify hazards and suggest appropriate control measures.
Understand and respond to workplace OHS risks and practices; support compliance of procedures for safe work practices.
Assist OHS nominee in adding required documents to the staff OHS folder.
