Research Assistant (Bioinformatician) Job Description An excellent opportunity is available for a Research Assistant (Bioinformatician) to join the Personalised Oncology division in the Brain Cancer Laboratory at Australia's pre-eminent biomedical research institute.
About the Position The Research Assistant will provide technical and operational support for the research in a laboratory or group, with a focus on optimising research productivity.
Research Assistants enable and facilitate research, contributing skills and expertise to projects within the group and with external collaborators, under the general direction of the Laboratory Head or Postdoctoral Scientist.
The Research Assistant is responsible for developing and applying mathematical, statistical and quantitative principles and techniques to solve problems.
They are also required to accurately record all results to contribute to research as directed.
In the Brain Cancer Research Laboratory, our aim is to develop improved diagnostics, treatments and pre-clinical models to ultimately improve the survival of patients with brain cancer.
In particular, we focus on the application of advanced omics technology to enable drug discovery and our understanding of the tumour microenvironment.
The successful candidate will have experience in the application of bioinformatics methods, in particular single cell omics, as well as proven success in the development of new bioinformatics approaches.
In addition, the successful candidate will have exceptional organisation, documentation and communication skillsets.
Laboratory skills and experience are favourably viewed.
Selection Criteria Knowledge and Skills: BSc with Honours or Masters in a relevant discipline such as statistics, mathematics, computational biology, computational science, etc.
An excellent academic record and achievements.
Demonstrated ability to perform complex bioinformatic analysis and/or develop bioinformatics methods.
Knowledge of programming languages such as Python and/or R.
Project management, excellent oral and written communication and reporting skills.
Personal Qualities: Good communication skills and the ability to work constructively within a team environment.
Ability to work as part of a team using bioinformatics tools.
Excellent attention to detail, ensuring that data, methods and theories are accurate, of high-quality and accessible to other researchers.
Ability to manage time effectively and be reliable and approachable.
Willing to take direction and have progress reviewed where required.
Terms of Appointment This position is available for 2 years in a full-time capacity.
Salary is Research Support Employee Level 5 - 6 ($79,629 - $99,979) dependent on experience.
Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
