Research Officer - Retinal Apply locations: Parkville, Victoria, Australia Time type: Full time Posted on: Posted 3 Days Ago Time left to apply: End Date: November 29, 2024 (30+ days left to apply) Job requisition id: JR3083 Job Title : Research Officer - Retinal Job Description An outstanding opportunity is available for a Research or Senior Research Officer in the genetics of retinal diseases to join the Bahlo Laboratory in the Genetics and Gene Regulation Division at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, in one of Australia's pre-eminent research institutes.
About the Position The Bahlo Lab is a computational biology and statistical genetics group that seeks to identify and understand genetic risk factors for human diseases, with a strong focus on neurological and retinal disorders.
The Bahlo Lab works on several retinal disorders including Macular Telangiectasia Type 2 (Mac Tel) and Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with a strong publication track record in genetic discoveries and mechanisms of disease in the field.
The Bahlo Lab has also been working on quantitative retinal traits, particularly those derived from retinal imaging data using AI techniques.
The lab leverages cutting-edge computational tools to analyse large-scale genomic datasets from local and international human disease cohorts to identify genetic variants associated with diseases, integrating these data with multi-omics data to gain biological understanding.
The lab has outstanding international collaborations in place, with access to high-quality data sets that span multiple 'omics platforms.
In addition, the Bahlo Lab has access to important biobanks such as the UK Biobank and Allof US for further exploration.
This position suits a curious, ambitious applicant who enjoys exploring genetic risk factors using multi-omics approaches.
The Bahlo lab has experience across most of the -omics data to be used and is highly collaborative.

The Bahlo Lab is highly collaborative, working closely with clinicians and molecular biologists, nationally and internationally.
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and self-directed individual who can work collaboratively with peers and collaborators.

Selection Criteria Essential Knowledge and Skills: A Ph D in computational biology, bioinformatics, or a quantitative discipline such as statistics, physics or computer science Prior experience in processing and analysis of human genetic data, including array and short-read sequencing data Experience with Unix-based operating systems, high-performance computing environments, and command line navigation Experience in systems biology and code-first data analysis (R / Python) A strong interest in genetics, both common and monogenic diseases Highly developed scientific writing, data visualisation and oral presentation skills Ability to communicate effectively with scientists from other disciplines Desirable Knowledge and Skills: Experience in the analysis of large genomic datasets, in particular whole genomes Experience with summary statistics integration, and causal inference methods for genomics Experience working in a multidisciplinary team Experience with cloud computing & containerisation; familiarity with GATK or similar sequencing analysis pipelines.
Experience in analysis of one or more of: radiomic, metabolomic, proteomic and transcriptomic data, in addition to genetics data Personal Qualities: Excellent self-organisational and time management skills Excellent communication skills, including presentation and writing skills A passion for human genetic research Attention to detail with a focus on achieving reproducible results A demonstrated interest in retinal diseases Terms of Appointment This position is available for 2 years in a full-time capacity with the potential for renewal.
Salary is Academic Level A6-B6 ($101,039 - $135,568).
Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
