The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Senior Adviser - Environmental Compliance to provide a critical role at Corporate Services and Infrastructure.
About the Business Unit Corporate Services and Infrastructure (CSI) group oversees and leads the key public accountability requirements of the department, including finance, asset management, procurement, risk management, audit, governance, performance reporting, climate action and environmental sustainability, and statutory planning and related functions.
The group also manages the governance and delivery of major infrastructure projects through the Community Safety Building Authority (CSBA), and information and communications technology (ICT), including cyber and information security management.
About the Role The Senior Adviser - Environmental Compliance is responsible for developing and managing the implementation and monitoring of processes to ensure the department is compliant with environmental legislation.
The role provides support, training, and advice to internal stakeholders to mitigate environmental impacts and improve environmental performance in accordance with the Environmental Management System (EMS).
The position plays an active role in preparing the department for changes in environmental regulations and policy by identifying, analysing and advising on environmental risk associated with department operations.
This work is carried out while developing and leading initiatives to ensure organisational commitment and achievement of environmental performance.
Some of your duties will include: Manage the departmental environmental compliance register in accordance with the EMS which meets ISO14001 and the Environment Protection Act 2017 – General Environmental Duty.
Provide advice on statutory environmental compliance relevant to both operational activities and capital (construction) programs.
Oversee the management and remediation of contaminated land and waters on departmental land.
About you To be successful in this role, you will have: Strong working knowledge of environmental compliance and how this practically applies to capital works and departmental operations.
A proven understanding of relevant legislation, policies, procedures and contemporary developments in the environmental field, such as Environmental Protection Act 1970 and the General Environmental Duty.
Qualifications An appropriate tertiary qualification in Environmental Science / Engineering, Natural Resource Management or proven experience in environmental compliance or relevant environmental experience is desirable.
