About the Role
*This is a Fixed Term position until 14th of September 2025
This position is responsible for providing high quality advice on a wide range of legal issues with a focus on a broad range of commercial and operational matters relating to the transport network. The Senior Lawyer, Transport Operations is expected to deliver high quality client service and timely, clear and pragmatic legal advice and related services. This position will undertake a wide variety of work across the Office of the General Counsel.
Provide high quality advice on a wide range of legal issues relating to commercial and operational matters, including the development and delivery of transport projects, road and public transport operator contracts, network integration and planning, major project interfaces, public private partnerships, franchising arrangements, alliance contract arrangements, property, construction, intellectual property and all associated contractual issues.
Draft and review a range of legal documentation, including commercial, property and construction agreements, dealing with sensitive issues, and conduct negotiations to settle documentation.
Establish and maintain strong partnerships with relevant stakeholders to support delivery of the Department's objectives.
Identify and escalate as necessary potential legal risk to the Department, implement risk mitigation strategies with the relevant business areas.
Undertake high level research and analysis of complex legal and policy issues and prepare reports, briefs and correspondence on legal issues and proposals at an advanced level.
Perform other duties and tasks as directed, including undertaking work from other Branches in the Office of the General Counsel.
Key Selection Criteria
The DTP is seeking a legal expert with experience in providing high-quality advice on commercial and operational matters within the transport sector, including project development, network integration, and public-private partnerships. The ideal candidate will have strong research and analytical skills, with proven expertise in negotiation, drafting legal advice, and handling complex legal documentation in commercial, property, and construction law. Excellent communication, organisation, and collaboration skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities within tight deadlines.
Qualifications and Experience
Mandatory
Admitted, or eligible to be admitted, as a lawyer in Victoria.
Experience in planning law and transport construction interface agreements will be viewed favorably.
