About the role: Reporting to the Principal Solicitor, Inquiries, the Solicitor role forms part of the team within the Legal Services and Integrity Branch.
You will assist the Principal Solicitor with a wide variety of work including but not limited to legal and strategic advice to support the Department of Health's response to inquiries, coronial inquests and investigations.
This role will also support the preparation of Ministerial correspondence, Cabinet submissions and other written reports and briefings to clients.
The role also works closely with the Dispute Resolution team and may be required to assist with litigation.
Working with the Principal Solicitor, the Solicitor will interface with the Victorian Government Solicitors Office (VGSO), external law firms and the Branch to promote the preparation of high-quality policy and strategic advice to the Secretary, Ministers and Cabinet that supports appropriate and well-drafted government engagement with the Yoorrook Justice Commission and other inquiries, inquests and investigations.
How you'll make a difference: Provide well-reasoned legal advice and other legal documents, briefings and correspondence.
Support the delivery of high quality, client focused and cost-effective legal services in relation to complex and sensitive matters with the aim of effectively and cooperatively resolving issues and ensuring the department adopts a culture of continual service improvement.
Collaborate with departmental colleagues to deliver client focused legal services.
Prepare briefs and instruct counsel and contracted solicitors on the State Government Legal Panel.
Determine priorities, meet legislative timelines and effectively balance competing demands with minimal supervision, working autonomously and as a member of a team.
Liaise with external stakeholders including barristers, court/tribunal staff, other government departments and agencies and professional bodies in relation to litigation and a wide range of legal and policy issues.
Suitable applicants will be able to demonstrate: The successful candidate must hold (or be eligible to hold) a current practicing certificate under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Vic).
Minimum of 2 years post admission experience.
Experience in litigation and government law, Royal Commissions and/or public, regulatory investigations, dispute resolution and litigation and the provision of legal advice to government would be desirable.
