The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to recruit IT professionals for various
Director (Executive Level 2 classification level)
roles in our
Technology and Security Division
(TSD).
We currently have a few IT Director roles vacant. Whilst we have identified vacancies in the areas outlined below, we expect staff rotations and staff changes over time to create other vacancies. If you have an interest in joining the ABS in a similar IT Director role please apply.
Our objective is to create a merit pool of suitable candidates to support current and expected EL2 vacancies (both permanent and temporary) across TSD.
About the roles
As a Director in TSD you will be leading the delivery of an IT program, working closely with ABS business and ICT colleagues. You will work as part of a collaborative IT leadership cohort and have the opportunity to develop culture and performance in diverse and highly virtualised teams.
Our Director roles are largely grouped as responsible for infrastructure and operations, applications support and delivery, and project delivery roles. In addition, TSD has Director roles across enabling areas including enterprise and ICT architecture and design, ICT workforce management, service provision and vendor management.

Whilst all roles require sound IT leadership experience, some of the roles have a higher level of specialisation. We offer career development opportunities and TSD may seek to move Directors across a range of roles over time to meet individual capabilities and interests, as well as work program requirements.
As a Director in TSD you will:
Provide professional and strategic leadership in the delivery of program objectives and business outcomes.
Provide ABS and TSD leadership in your area of expertise.
Engage with internal colleagues at all levels as well as external stakeholders (cross agency, international statistical agencies, vendors – including some contract management responsibilities) to shape ABS ICT for the future.
Work as part of the senior leadership team to help evolve the future culture of the ABS.
Communicate effectively, exercise good judgement and negotiate with influence to achieve agreed outcomes.
Manage competing priorities and deliverables across a set of projects, or a collection of business-as-usual activities, with a focus on efficiency, innovation and early delivery of business benefits.
Lead, manage and develop teams to regularly and consistently deliver practical outputs that lead to quantifiable business outcomes.
What we are looking for
To be suitable you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities and experience:
Demonstrated domain-specific knowledge and experience managing IT programs in your preference area/s, to deliver complex solutions with competing priorities.
Professional and strategic leadership to build and enhance the capability of a virtual technical team in collaboration with commercial partners and internal business stakeholders for the delivery of complex solutions.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to build, influence and maintain effective relationships with diverse clients and stakeholders (internal and external), including TSD Executive.
Personal drive, integrity, and commitment to the APS Values and Code of Conduct and ongoing self-development.

The ABS also has an important coordination function with respect to the statistical activities of other official bodies, both in Australia and overseas.
