The Accounting Assistant reports to the Finance Unit Supervisor. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. Responsibilities Under the overall supervision of the Finance Supervisor, the Accounting Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: Records and reconciles more complex accounting transactions. As required, performance of cashier function including maintains the branch bank balances to secure liquidity to cover the disbursements and take necessary action in case of insufficient funds, process bank transfer for USD, MXN and other currency and forward the voucher to bank transfer signatories for digital sign-off, custodian of the petty cash and its effective management, as well other related tasks. Assists in the processing of payments to governments, consultants, individual contractors and vendors for goods and services. This includes, amongst other things, calculating, inputting, and checking payments for correctness and communicating discrepancies to supervisors. Assists in processing payments to staff members for their entitlements including salaries, claims and education grants. Drafts/prepares memoranda and other kind of communications to various offices, departments and overseas offices. Responds to queries from staff members and third parties. Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. Performs other duties as may be required. Education High school diploma or equivalent is required. NOTE: For positions in the General Service category, candidates are required to clearly indicate in their Applicant Profile (AP) relevant information confirming completion of High School. Job - Specific Qualification Supplemental technical or university courses in a field of accounting related fields is desirable. Work Experience A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in accounting, finance or related fields is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to three (3) years for candidates who possess a first-level university. Experience working with Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) systems is required. 1 year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable. Experience in cashier activities is desirable. Experience with Microsoft 365 tools, specifically, Excel and Power BI are desirable. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Spanish is a working language of ECLAC. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; and fluency in Spanish is required. Knowledge of the second language (English/Spanish) will be tested unless it can be supported by a certificate from a recognized institution.
