Reporting to the Chief Counsel, this senior leadership role oversees the operations of Victoria Legal Aid's Chambers, and provides high level strategic, policy and project management advice and support.
Full time ongoing position
Salary range: $157,341 - $180,991 plus super plus salary packaging
Up to $15,900 in salary packaging and hybrid WFH & office model
About the role:
You will manage the operations of VLA Chambers and provide strategic, policy and operational support to the Chief Counsel. You will support and strengthen Chambers' service delivery in advocacy, advice, legal education and mentoring in accordance with organisational strategies and priorities.
As Associate Director, you will be responsible for managing Chambers' service delivery and work allocation. You will manage the strategic development and implementation of briefing policies and practices. Together with the Chief Counsel, you will work to ensure that our briefing and other practices are effective, efficient, fair and equitable. You will manage organisational-wide projects, such as the Equitable Briefing Strategy and Trial Counsel Development Program. You will coordinate professional development and training across a group of advocates. You will have up to 8 direct reports and will support regionally based staff.
This role is based at our Melbourne CBD office on Wurundjeri Country.
About you:
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:
Leadership experience in the legal and/or public sector including a demonstrated ability to develop and meet strategic priorities; develop and support high-performing teams; build effective working relationships with key stakeholders; and respond to emerging and changing organisational needs.
Substantial practising or senior operational experience working within a complex legal environment and a thorough knowledge of the Victorian Justice system. This includes an understanding of the legal assistance sector, the mixed model of service delivery and the work done by specialist counsel within the sector.
Demonstrated skills in service design and delivery, including client first approaches, client engagement, analysing and interpreting data, reporting and budgeting.
High level interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to support and manage specialist counsel, effectively engage with people across all levels of an organisation, and provide high level advice (oral and written) on organisational and policy issues.
Demonstrated management experience with sound knowledge of finance processes and experience adhering to strict budgets.
