About The Peter Doherty Institute The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, launched in September 2014, stands as a global leader in infectious diseases and immunity research.
This cutting-edge organisation, a joint venture between the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, excels in addressing critical health threats like influenza, HIV, and drug-resistant bacteria.
It offers a unique blend of research, teaching, and clinical care, with a strong emphasis on translational research and collaborative approaches to improving global health outcomes.
Under the leadership of Professor Sharon Lewin, a distinguished expert in HIV and infectious diseases, the Institute is staffed by over 700 professionals.
These experts engage in a broad spectrum of activities, including discovery research, the diagnosis and surveillance of infectious disease outbreaks, and the development of novel prevention and treatment strategies.

About this Opportunity The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a senior leadership role responsible for driving the Institute's operational strategy and delivering impactful results.
Reporting to the Director, the COO oversees corporate functions such as governance, finance, grants and contracts management, and people and culture.
The role also involves high-level recruitment, facility management, and the coordination of broad operational activities.
As a key member of The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity Executive team, the COO will collaborate closely with high-level stakeholders within the Institute, the University of Melbourne, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and government entities.
The position requires extensive organisational knowledge, significant judgement, and the ability to implement and develop strategic initiatives while maintaining strong relationships with university shared services and other partners.
About you We seek a dynamic leader with a proven track record in strategic and operational management, resource stewardship, and governance.
The ideal candidate will hold a postgraduate degree or equivalent and bring extensive experience in complex organisations.
You should have a passion for supporting innovative programs, with skills in leading teams, managing resources, and navigating a multi-faceted environment.
Your ability to inspire your team and drive impactful outcomes will be critical.
Strong financial management, strategic planning, and adaptability are essential, along with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
An MBA or similar management qualification is desirable.
Experience in the tertiary education and research sector, familiarity with funding models, and knowledge of Victoria's health services are advantageous.
Understanding the University's financial and budgetary systems, and experience in commercial portfolio management, change management, and quality management systems would also be beneficial.
