Harvest are proud to partner with a local council to assist in their search for a Coordinator Governance & Risk to join their team in Bannockburn, Victoria.
About the role
Reporting to the Director of Corporate Services, the Coordinator Governance & Risk will provide oversight and specialist advice to the council on corporate governance matters in line with Local Government Act obligations and related legislation.
You will provide leadership, strategic advice, guidance, support, and coordination in the development and maintenance of an effective and robust governance system.
This role will provide you with the opportunity to:
Provide recommendations and advice to the CEO, Senior Management, and Council on strategies and processes to improve and embed good governance practices, legislative obligations, compliance, legislative reform matters, and Councillor conduct issues, including carrying out the duties of Councillor Conduct Officer if required under the Local Government Act 2020.
Develop a continuous governance improvement plan and framework, provide quarterly reporting to the executive, Council, and the Audit & Risk Committee, and take a lead role in all governance projects.
Oversee arrangements and coordinate operational support for Council Meetings and Briefings in accordance with the Governance Rules and the Local Government Act 2020.
Implement and manage the Council's Enterprise Risk Framework and systems, and facilitate the Council's strategic risk register, ensuring that risk management practices operate within the framework.
Effectively manage the Council's insurance portfolio.
The ideal candidate will have:
A tertiary qualification related to Governance, Law, or Business Management and several years of relevant experience working in local government governance, corporate governance, the legal environment, or a related industry.
A demonstrated understanding of the Local Government Act 2020 and other relevant legislation, policies, practices, and statutory duties associated with local government.
The ability to monitor legislation, undertake research, interpret legislation and regulations, and prepare advice and recommendations for action.
Strong leadership skills, with the ability to lead collaboratively and persuasively, promoting high-quality advice and submissions to the Executive and Council.
A sound understanding of Council meeting procedures and good governance practices.
Political astuteness and the ability to build positive, constructive working relationships across the organisation and with Councillors.
Experience managing issues and negotiating successful outcomes in a political environment.
