About the role: The Privacy Legal Team at Medibank is a key business partner across the Medibank group and a part of the broader Trust, Legal & Company Secretariat (TLC) group.

We have two exciting new opportunities available for Senior Legal Counsel to join our talented TLC team.
The two Senior Legal Counsel will report to the Head of Privacy Legal and be part of a highly regarded team that works closely with the business.
As the Senior Legal Counsel, you will play a pivotal role in managing and supporting the Customer, Trust, Technology and People Services & Sustainability teams.
As the Senior Legal Counsel, you will lead the provision of strategic, high quality, commercial and timely legal services to defined business areas in Medibank Group, supporting Medibank's compliance with privacy laws and internal policies, and management of privacy risks.
You will manage and be supported by a direct report legal counsel.
Uniquely positioned as part of the Privacy Legal team but working alongside the business, the Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible for delivering legal services including: advising on privacy issues and risks in relation to commercial projects and proposals and disputes (including conducting PIAs, considering data retention matters, consent proposals, etc); advising on potential privacy incidents (including eligible data breaches) and preparing notices to the OAIC as necessary; providing cultural leadership, conducting training and promoting the importance of privacy for our customers; seeking innovative and efficient ways to deliver legal advice and support the business to identify and comply with privacy obligations, including through designing creative self-service tools; managing the provision of external legal services as relevant to ensure quality, timely, value for money support.
About you To be successful in this role you will have: 7+ years' post qualification experience (PQE) and substantial experience gained within a large commercial law firm or the in-house legal team of a large or complex organisation; A minimum of 3 years' experience specifically practicing privacy law (including the federal Notifiable Data Breach scheme); A strong understanding of and experience with the interrelationship of privacy and areas such as consumer and marketing laws, data governance and data security; Extensive experience in providing pragmatic, high quality, privacy law advice to both operational staff and stakeholders at all levels; Previous exposure to legal incident and compliance management; health records/health services; and/or negotiation and management of legal disputes would be an advantage; The proven ability to balance working autonomously and largely unsupervised while in a collaborative team environment, supervising and coaching more junior legal counsel and supporting the development and success of other team members; The ability to undertake objective and critical analysis, prioritise based on legal risk, navigate through multiple priorities in parallel, and excellent verbal and written communication, presentation, and influencing skills; The ability to bring your authentic self to work and have a focus on health and wellbeing.
