Syphilis Surveillance Specialist (HSC2) This is a permanent position with the flexibility to work from home.
What You Will Do: Join the Washington State Department of Health's Office of Infectious Disease (OID) Assessment Unit and play a crucial role in protecting public health.
In this position, you'll be at the heart of statewide surveillance for Treponema pallidum bacterium (Syphilis) and providing support to surveillance programs for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and drug user health.
You'll ensure that public health assessments are carried out accurately and on time, helping to develop strategies to address health disparities in communities most affected by these diseases.
You'll work closely with DOH surveillance staff, local health jurisdictions, medical providers, and laboratory personnel.
Your role will be key in collecting and evaluating critical surveillance data, particularly focusing on syphilis, HIV, and other STIs.
Your efforts will support our mission to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequities across Washington State.
Expectations and Responsibilities : Monitor and review incoming electronic lab reports for syphilis, ensuring data accuracy and completeness.
Enter lab results into the confidential database, match incoming data to existing records, and update patient information as needed.
Review positive test results to identify potential new cases of syphilis based on testing history and guidelines.
Initiate syphilis investigations, assign cases to disease intervention specialists, and update the central database upon investigation completion.
Build and maintain relationships with internal staff, health jurisdictions, and laboratories to collect and verify data, and ensure alignment with equity strategies to address health disparities.
Perform quality assurance by reviewing reports for completeness and accuracy, following up on missing or conflicting data, and applying quality improvement tools to enhance data quality.
Monitor lab data volume and content to ensure timely and accurate reporting of notifiable conditions.
Troubleshoot and resolve data issues with laboratories, Local Health Jurisdictions, and other stakeholders.
As backup, assist with data entry and surveillance activities for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and STI surveillance, including performing record searches and quality assurance checks to ensure accurate case reporting and data collection.
Maintain strict patient confidentiality and adherence to procedures and policies.

This is a remote/home-based position available to applicants residing anywhere in Washington State, as well as those living near the Oregon/Washington border and the Idaho/Washington border.

You must meet one of the required qualification options listed and any additional qualifications included to be considered for this position.
Option 1: 4+ years of experience with health data and medical terminology, plus 2+ years with health database systems.
Option 2: Associate's Degree or higher, 2+ years with health data and medical terminology, plus 1+ year with health database systems.
Option 3: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Public Health, Health Care Administration, Public/Business Administration, or a related field with coursework in health data and medical terminology, plus 1+ year with health database systems.
Additional Required Experience: Demonstrated experience maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information accessed or discussed while performing duties of a position.
Demonstrated ability to act as a central point of contact between internal and external entities, with a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

Who We Are: OID: Empowering Communities and Saving Lives! The Office of Infectious Disease provides services to prevent and control sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS, adult viral hepatitis and assesses the incidence and prevalence of these diseases.
The office is also responsible for the HIV Client Services Early Intervention Program which pays for medications, insurance premiums and limited medical, mental health and dental care for low-income, eligible HIV-positive individuals.
It tracks and assesses disease and health conditions by collecting, analyzing and evaluating data.
It maintains databases that aid targeting resources toward current data trends.

Conditions of Employment: Commit to a full-time 40-hour work week schedule, Monday through Friday (flexible work schedule requests must be approved supervisor).

Perform my job duties remotely from home with optional in-person meetings at a designated DOH site location.

Engage in emergency response exercises and high-priority assignments as assigned during emergency events.
